Helen Sawyer

Sawyer Photo Helen Sawyer (1898-1999), began spending winters in Sarasota during the late 1930's with her husband Jerry Farnsworth. Both were already established as award winning artists and teachers in Cape Cod. During a period of more than fifty years while living in Sarasota, Sawyer continued to show in major exhibits and won awards with paintings hanging in many collections throughout the US including the Carnegie Institute, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Syracuse Univ. in NY, Library of Congress. She also exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the 1933 and 1939 World's Fair, the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC and the Ringling Museum of Art. Many people considered Helen to be the "Heart" of Sarasota arts community.

Education

Helen Sawyer was born in Washington DC, attended the Master's School in Dobbs Ferry, New York, where her artistic talents were immediately noted. She spent several years with her family in Spain.

Upon her return she went to Charles W. Hawthorne's school in Cape Cod. She later took courses at the Art Students League and the National Academy School in New York City and Charles Hawthorne in Provincetown, MA.

Her father was renowned portrait painter Wells M. Sawyer.
